Why do some homes have aluminum wiring?
During a copper shortage in the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, builders widely used aluminum for branch wiring, the circuits that feed your outlets, switches, and lights. Millions of homes were wired this way, including many here in Central Texas. If your home dates to that window, there is a real chance it has aluminum branch wiring.
So is it actually dangerous?
The wire running through your walls is usually fine. The problem is at the terminations, the points where wiring connects to outlets, switches, and fixtures. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper and oxidizes differently, so over the years those connections can loosen and build up resistance. That resistance creates heat, and heat at a connection is what leads to scorched outlets and, in the worst cases, fires.
How can I tell if my home has it?
- The home was built or rewired between about 1965 and 1973.
- Outlet or switch cover plates feel warm, or outlets look discolored or scorched.
- You notice a faint plastic or burning smell near outlets or switches.
- Lights flicker or outlets work intermittently for no clear reason.
- You can see “AL” or “aluminum” printed on the cable jacket in the panel or attic.
The safest way to know for sure is to have a licensed electrician take a look, rather than opening outlets yourself.
What can you do about it?
You do not necessarily have to rewire your whole house. The most common fixes correct the connections so your devices terminate on copper:
