Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s wiring, and when it can no longer keep up, it stops being a minor annoyance and becomes a safety risk. What is an electrical panel upgrade?
An electrical panel upgrade replaces your existing breaker box or fuse box with a new, higher-capacity panel, most often a move from 100 amps to 200 amps. It gives your home more power, modern breakers that trip safely, and room for new circuits and big appliances.
1. Your breakers trip often (or you still have fuses)
Occasional trips are normal. Frequent ones mean your circuits are overloaded or your panel is struggling. And if you are still replacing fuses, your panel predates modern breakers entirely and is overdue for an update.
2. Lights dim or flicker when appliances kick on
If the lights dip when the AC, microwave, or dryer starts, your panel may not be delivering steady power, a sign you are pushing its limits.
3. You rely on power strips and extension cords
Running out of outlets and daisy-chaining power strips is a workaround for a panel that does not have enough circuits, and it can be a fire risk.
4. You are adding a major new load
Planning an EV charger, a Generac generator, a hot tub, a pool, a shop, or an addition? These are big, continuous loads that often require more capacity than an older panel can provide.
5. You have a known problem-brand panel
Panels from Federal Pacific (FPE), Zinsco, or Pushmatic are widely associated with breakers that fail to trip during a fault, a genuine fire hazard. Many inspectors and insurers now flag them, and replacement is strongly recommended.
6. The panel is warm, buzzing, scorched, or rusted
A panel that is hot to the touch, humming, showing burn marks, or corroded (common on older outdoor panels) needs professional attention right away.
7. Your home is 30-plus years old and never updated
If your panel has never been touched in three or four decades, it was simply not designed for today’s electrical lifestyle.
