WHY IT MATTERS
When detectors are interconnected, an alarm in the garage or downstairs will wake someone sleeping at the other end of the house, which is exactly when seconds count. Hardwired units with battery backup also stop the dreaded 3 a.m. low-battery chirp and keep working during an outage. For newer homes and remodels, this setup is typically required by code.
